Percussion spectacular for DRUMatiX anniversary

Canberra's DRUMatiX Percussion group will perform their 15th anniversary concert, The Next Phrase, at the ANU Arts Centre tonight.

The concert will revisit some of the group's defining moments, including Nigel Westlake's Kalabash which was premiered by the group in 2004, Steve Reich's Drumming and a special version of Frederic Rzewski's Coming Together, first heard in Canberra in 2007.

Alumni and friends of DRUMatiX will travel from around the country to perform. Celebrated alumni Bree van Reyk and Charles Martin will present exciting new projects, including a piece for two blindfolded musicians and another inspired by the sights and sounds of life in northern Sweden.

Associate Professor Gary France, Director of DRUMatiX since founding the group in 1998 and Head of Percussion at the ANU School of Music, said:

"This concert will feature the whole range of instruments and influences in the percussion world. World music, jazz, contemporary classical are all featured in our music. This is really music that everybody loves.

It's wonderful to have students come back with their own compositions and ensembles. They're the new generation of percussionists in Australia”.

When: Friday 30 November and Saturday 1 December, 7.30pm
Where: ANU Arts Centre, Union Court, ANU
